Who do I call in an emergency?

In an emergency, the key is stay calm, ensure safety first, and know who to contact. Here’s a guide on who to contact in an emergency

Medical Emergency (serious illness, accident, injury)

  1. Dial 000 (Australia) or 111 (New Zealand) immediately and ask for help
  2. Clearly state your location, nature of emergency, and contact number
  3. Administer first aid only if trained
  4. Contact Study Vision (+61410691761 or +61419016776)
  5. Inform the student’s caregiver or emergency contact as soon as possible.

Non-Urgent Medical Issue (Australia)

  1. Call healthdirect (1800 022 222) to speak with a registered nurse about your issue
  2. If you need an interpreter, call TIS National on 131 450 and ask to be transferred to healthdirect

Fire, Gas Leak, or Dangerous Situation

  1. Dial 000 (Australia) or 111 (New Zealand) immediately and ask for help
  2. Evacuate everyone to a safe place outside.
  3. Do not re-enter the building until authorities say it is safe.
  4. Contact Study Vision (+61410691761 or +61419016776)
  5. Inform the student’s caregiver or emergency contact as soon as possible.

Mental Health or Emotional Crisis

  1. Ensure the person is not left alone if at risk.
  2. Dial 000 (Australia) or 111 (New Zealand) immediately if urgent (e.g., risk of harm to self or others).
  3. Otherwise, contact Lifeline (13 11 14) or Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800)
  4. Contact Study Vision (+61410691761 or +61419016776) and update them
  5. Inform the student’s caregiver or emergency contact as soon as possible.

Practical Tips for Hosts and Students

  1. Keep a list of emergency contacts (Study Vision, caregiver, parents, emergency contact)
  2. Make sure the student knows how to dial 000 and give their address clearly
  3. Practice a basic evacuation plan (e.g., where to meet outside)

The golden rule: Call 000 first if life or safety is at risk, then contact Study Vision and the caregiver/emergency contact
